Music -  School Bands

As a music department we work really hard on the performance aspect of music. When possible we push our students to perform as much as possible. In the past we have performed at numerous shows including the Smokefree Rockquest, Wyndham Fireworks Shows, Māruawai Matariki Festivals, Wyndham Street Markets, as well as at Assemblies, Prize Giving shows and regular lunchtime concerts. We find these type of events are huge confidence boosters for our students. It also teaches soft relational skills that tauira need to succeed. These skills include; relationship building, perseverance, time management, and other interpersonal skills.

We have seen a lot of success in these events including many placings at regional contests as well as personal successes with students overcoming their own obstacles in order to have the confidence they need to complete the task. We have had one band ‘The Methylene Blues’ put their music on Spotify after being recorded at The Southern Institute Of Technology.

Music students often find the skill set that they acquire flows on to successes in other subject areas as well. Menzies has recently had their first cohort of NCEA Level One students acquire credits through musical performance assessments on site and this will continue in the future. We are introducing technology into our subject area as well with the aid of an iMac computer suite where students can create music through a digital medium as well.
