3rd May 2024 - Term 2 Week 1

From the Principal's Desk

Kia ora koutou katoa

Pleasing progress was made over the holidays on school maintenance and improvement projects. The exterior painting of the hall and west boundary garage is now complete. There is new carpet in Rooms 1,2 and 10. The toilet upgrades in the Technology block and hall are now complete and will be fully operational next week. There is also a new utility space by the Art Room that has been repurposed from the old staff and female toilets. The replacement of the swimming pool roof is almost complete.
Mould remediation work in the Technology block ceiling is complete. A temporary ceiling has been installed to allow for observation of the affected areas to see if the encapsulation method has been successful. If it has been, the same solution will be used on the other affected areas. For now, the corridor and toilets by S2, the library office and behind Room 1 and 2, remain no go zones.

Today we received news that the Lunches in Schools program will continue for the next two years while it is reviewed. This is the best news we have had this year for a number of reasons:
  • The food makes a difference to student attendance and learning
  • The system we run for the delivery of food strengthens our values
  • The five staff members do a fantastic job of providing nutritious meals
  • The profit from providing the meals in house goes back into school improvement
I would like to think that some of the letters students from Menzies College wrote to politicians, encouraging them to keep the program going, had some influence on this decision.

Teachers have the right to have a paid union meeting once a year as part of their employment contract. This year the meeting is on Wednesday 15th May at 2pm in Invercargill. School will finish at 12.30pm after lunch. Where possible, buses will leave early. If students are not able to go home at 12.30pm, there will be limited supervision in the Library from 1pm.

We are in the process of replacing the Menzies College sign on the corner of Florence and Alma Street. There are three concepts that we would like your feedback on. Have a look at the options below, then follow the link to select your preferred option.

Senior Outdoor Wanaka Camp

During the last week of Term 1, the two senior Outdoor classes travelled up to Wanaka for their annual camp experience. Luckily, the rain that was forecast didn't eventuate until later, and allowed a few hours to set up tents and get sorted. Tuesday and Wednesday were jam packed with great activities, which involved kayaking down the top section of the Clutha river from our campsite ( Lake Outlet) down to Albert town. The rain didn't dampen anyone's spirits and everyone got down the river with its small sections of rapids. Some even challenged themselves to roll in the river, or perform a buddy rescue, which was great to see.

Mountain biking around the Deans Bank tracks was another main activity. The conditions were fairly testing, with good amounts of rain and mud present in every session! Because of the weather conditions, the usual outdoor climbing on natural rock face wasn't an option. Groups completed their climbing indoors at Basecamp , situated in Wanaka. Some great climbing and belaying was on display, with some students having their first go at lead climbing.

The final night saw the students dress up and make their way into Wanaka and have dinner together which is always a highlight. A massive thankyou to our helpers : Cindy Dean, Cody & Katrina Read , Josh Barnfather , Pete Holden , Phil Greer & Blair Timpany. We really appreciate your time and skills!

Level 2 Agriculture

The Level 2 Agriculture class had an enjoyable end to the first term. We travelled out to Brian Carnie's farm and spent the day learning how to crutch lambs. Brian was great with our students, encouraging them and showing them the finer points of how to use a handpiece. The students found it challenging, yet very satisfying. Many thanks to Brian for hosting us. Also a massive thank you to our very own Alex Hoffman for organising the day for us all!

Students have been monitoring radish growth under various conditions as part of their Level 2 Investigation. They have been checking the plots each Monday and collecting data for the past six weeks. Final reports are currently underway as we speak . Looking ahead for Term 2 , Students will be completing some unit standards on weather processes, sheep breeding , chainsaw use and ATV quad bikes.

Year 11 Commerce

During Week 10 of Term one, the Year 11 Commerce class visited the Southland Business Chamber to help develop their exciting business ideas. They met with business leaders who gave them valuable mentoring advice and then completed a workshop on 3D printing. They will be able to use these skills to develop prototypes for their products and be able to conduct valuable market sampling.

Commerce Teacher

Hunter Gatherers Team

During term one we started up a new initiative to get students outdoors and taking part in a wide variety of outdoor pursuits, based around hunting & fishing. Week one saw a great turn out with 21 students, which grew each week steadily to 34 at our clay bird shooting session late last term.
Over the weeks we have tried our hands at bowhunting, fishing, rifle shooting, clay bird shooting & completing a navigation /compass course. Many thanks to all staff and parents who have assisted with transport and activity supervision. A special thanks to Warren Ayers who hosted us at his farm for bowhunting and rifle shooting and also organised our clay bird shooting session at the Mataura Gun club. Many thanks to club member Doug Smith who also gave his time generously for us.
Thank you

South Island Secondary Athletic Championships

Menzies College had two students representing at the South Island Secondary Athletic Championships in Timaru, during the weekend of the 6th & 7th of April. It was a culmination of hard work in training, and success at other secondary school athletic events that lead to Year 9 student Zoe Muir and Year 11 student Leo Lenssen competing against the very best athletes in the South Island.
Leo Lenssen, was placed 4th in Long Jump. His second event Javelin saw him placed 6th and achieving a personal best.
Zoe Muir had a great weekend being able to achieve a personal best in all of her
events and finished with a 2nd in Javelin, 3rd in Discus, 4th in 800m and 5th in 400m.
Congratulations to both students for your hard work and persistent effort to achieve
your personal best.
